First edition, 1996.  Large 8vo, pp.xv:911, original cloth;  slight smudge to edge of text block else fine in dustwrapper. This volume inscribed and signed by the author on title.
With three autograph letters from the author. The first, 2-sides 8vo, dated 20th October 1969, thanking the recipient for his comments on Volume 1 and commenting on the proposed Volume 2:  "You may well ask what I shall call vol. ii, I have no idea.  I hate subtitles, & we had in fact agreed not to have one ... until the publisher's salesmen, those curious men, insisted that we must ..... I'm looking forward to vol.ii - it is  really the book I wanted to tackle in the first place, before I decided to try my hand at a complete life .........." etc. 
The second letter 3-sides 8vo, dated 20th April 1984:  "... You are kind to write as you did about my Vol.ii, I am not entirely pleased with it myself; but iii, with any luck should be easier to write in many ways despite the mass of material for the final decade.  More, a good deal more, about Pitt's domestic life .... I didn't escape Plumb's attentions in point of fact, far from it, or those of a couple of his associates ....."  etc.  Together with a retained copy of the original letter from the recipient to Ehrman which prompted this response. 
The third letter 1
½ sides 8vo, is dated 16th Dec. 1996:  "...... Completing & seeing through Pitt into print was a tiring process & it is rather pleasant to relax ...... Pitt goes along surprisingly well - I fear that a good many of those who have bought vol.iii will find they have bitten off rather more than they may have expected ......."  etc. 
A good set of the first editions of this monumental biography, almost 30 years in the writing. With these three interesting autograph letters commenting on the writing of each.
